What is a coupling?
A coupling is a mechanical part that connects two shafts (main shaft and driven shaft) in different organizations and makes them rotate together to transfer torque or rotation angle. The coupling compensates the displacement between the two shafts and has the ability to absorb vibration and cushion the impact, even if the transmission abnormally exerts excessive torque on the rotary shaft during operation, the coupling will be damaged first, thus playing the role of protecting the motor.
Functional characteristics
- Transmission of torque: Transmission of power from one rotor to another.
- Absorb vibration: Reduce the vibration caused by uneven rotation and improve the stability of the system.
- Compensate errors: Allow small deflections, angular errors or axial displacements between axes to increase the flexibility of the system.
- Protection of equipment: In case of system overload, some couplings may slip or break to protect other expensive components.
Selection of couplings
- Although couplings are mechanical parts that transmit torque and rotation angle, each has its own fixed characteristics. Therefore, in the selection process, the necessary characteristics for use must be taken into account in order to choose the most suitable coupling.
- After deciding on the type, the model number is determined with reference to the external dimensions and technical parameters of the product.
Installation and cautions
- When installing the coupling, please make strict alignment adjustments. It is recommended to use the concave-convex fit method to align the two shafts, or use a right-angle ruler to stick on the periphery of the body and check with two points about 90° apart to ensure the highest concentricity of the coupling, otherwise the service life of the coupling will be greatly affected by the difference of the centering accuracy.
- To avoid accidents during installation, always disconnect the main power supply of the drive unit and make sure it is safe before installation.
- When installing the coupling, remove any dust or foreign matter attached to the mounting shaft and the coupling bore.
- In order to maximize the performance of the coupling, when two or more deviations occur simultaneously during installation, the tolerance values for selection are considered to be less than half.
The role of couplings in these applications is not limited to the transfer of torsional moments and compensation of displacements, but also helps to increase the safety and operational efficiency of the entire system.
